Bath time doesn't have to end with a soaked bathroom and a sulking dog. With a little preparation and a lot of patience, you can make it a positive experience your dog actually tolerates—maybe even enjoys.
Set up before the suds
Gather everything first: shampoo, a couple of towels, a non-slip mat for the tub, and plenty of treats. Brush your dog thoroughly to remove loose hair and tangles—wet mats only get tighter.
The routine
- Lukewarm water, never hot. Test it on your wrist.
- Wet from the neck back, saving the head for last to avoid the “shake.”
- Lather gently with a dog-specific shampoo, working with the coat, not against it.
- Rinse twice as long as you think you need to—leftover product is the number-one cause of itchy skin.
- Keep the water out of the ears and eyes.
Dry & reward
Towel-dry well, and use a low, cool dryer setting if your dog allows it. Finish with calm praise and a treat so the whole experience ends on a high note. Go slowly, keep your voice light, and stop for a break if your dog gets overwhelmed.
