Brushing is the single most valuable thing you can do for your dog's coat at home. It removes loose hair, spreads healthy oils, and—most importantly—stops mats before they start.
Why mats matter
Mats aren't just unsightly. They pull on the skin, trap moisture and dirt, and can hide irritation underneath. Severe matting sometimes leaves no kind option but to clip the coat short and start fresh, so prevention really is everything.
Brush like a pro
- Use the right tool: a slicker brush for most coats, plus a comb to find hidden tangles.
- Brush in sections, all the way down to the skin—not just over the top.
- Pay special attention to friction zones: behind the ears, armpits, collar area and tail.
- Work gently through small tangles; never yank.
Aim for a few short sessions each week rather than one marathon. Keep it light and rewarding, and your dog will come to see the brush as part of the routine—not a chore.
