Yes, You Can Bathe a Cat — Here's How

Cats are famously self-cleaning, so they rarely need baths—but “rarely” isn't “never.” Long-haired cats, seniors, very young kittens, and cats who get into something sticky sometimes need our help.

Before you start

Brush first to remove loose hair and mats. Trim the nails (or have us do it). Choose a calm time of day, and keep everything within arm's reach so you never have to leave your cat alone in the water.

The gentle approach

  • Use just a few inches of lukewarm water and a non-slip surface.
  • A cat-specific shampoo only—dog and human products are not safe for cats.
  • Wash from the neck back, keeping water away from ears and face.
  • Rinse thoroughly, then wrap in a warm towel.

If your cat finds the whole idea outrageous (many do), don't force it. Our groomers handle cats of all temperaments every week, with the patience and low-stress techniques that keep things safe for everyone.
